In April 2012 NEXUS launched a new project to support vulnerable young people. With funding of £221,076 from the Big Lottery, the project aims to reduce the number of young people at risk of being sexually exploited in the Western and Southern Trust areas.
Based in Derry and Portadown respectively, the project will work to increase the self-esteem and self-worth of young people in or leaving care, as well as teaching them about the dangers of sexual exploitation and where to access help.
It will also run education and personal development programmes to teach child protection skills to teenage parents.
The project will offer education courses teaching young people with learning difficulties appropriate and inappropriate behaviour as well as running a preventative education programme for young people across the trusts, teaching them how to protect themselves while on the internet and social networking sites.
